Sports, Girls and Parents

Some parents at the school may remember Lister Farrar, an active parent who just recently moved on from our school this past year. Lister provided the following links to interesting articles:

As Girls Become Women, Sports Pay Dividends

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/16/health/16well.html?th&emc=th

Good quote here:

“It’s not just that the people who are going to do well in life play sports, but that sports help people do better in life,” she said, adding, “While I only show this for girls, it’s reasonable to believe it’s true for boys as well.”

And another good one, to balance the, um, somewhat too keen parents:

Parents who push create unhealthy obsession in child athletes, research finds

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/family-and-relationships/parents-who-push-create-unhealthy-obsession-in-child-athletes-research-finds/article1468670/

A good quote here:

“An Olympic riddle: Two athletes arrive in Vancouver. The first vows: I will win gold. The second says: I will achieve my very best. Who finishes first?

As it turns out, for all our talk about the fire of competition needed to win, research suggests the odds of either one of them standing on the podium are pretty much equal. The difference: The second athlete is more likely to feel real joy, both in the heat of the race and the thrill of victory – and for that, a Montreal psychologist says, she can thank her parents.”

Thanks Lister for passing those on, both were excellent reading.
